Free trademark search
Can I do a trademark search for free?
Yes. You can search US federal trademarks for free using official USPTO tools, including USPTO trademark search. FreeTrademarkAPI will also offer a free US knockout search API (API key required) for bots and developers.
A knockout search is a quick conflict screen. It is not a full legal clearance opinion.
Is there a way to trademark for free?
Search can be free. Registration is not. USPTO charges government filing fees. Applicants outside the US must hire a US-licensed attorney to file US trademarks. See how to trademark a name for free.
How can I find out if a name is already trademarked?
- Humans: search the USPTO trademark database.
- Agents and developers: use FreeTrademarkAPI knockout search (mark + international class → available / not available) when it launches, or USPTO’s own data products.
Checking a name is not the same as clearance. Read knockout vs clearance.
How to check if a name is available
- Identify the mark and the international class for the goods or services.
- Run a search (USPTO UI or, at launch, the FreeTrademarkAPI knockout).
- Treat “available” style knockout results as a screen, not permission to file or brand.

Consumer tools vs developer API
This site is not a consumer trademark search website. It is an API-first product for automation and agent workflows. Humans who want a search box should use USPTO’s official search. Agents should start with knockout search.
